Description

Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 – 1652), an Italian painter of the early Baroque period, enjoys renewed popularity through feminism. Gentileschi is known for her use of chiaroscuro (clair obscure) in the style of Caravaggio. She painted Biblical scenes; several times the gory history of Judith, a favorite subject among the Caravagists. Works by Gentileschi include the paintings Judith Beheading Holofernes, a masterpiece in the Capodimonte museum in Naples, the Mary Magdalene in the Galleria Pitti in Florence and the Christ among the doctors in New York. There is a self-portrait in the collection of Queen Elizabeth of England.

Noteworthy is also that she became a student of Agostino Tassi, a landscape painter who taught her to draw perspective, but who also raped her. Since she expected him to marry her and restore her honor, she continued to have a sexual relationship with Tassi, but that never happened. Nine months after the rape, her father filed a complaint against Tassi, also indicating that Tassi had stolen a painting of Judith from the Gentileschi family’s household. During the trial, she was subjected to a gynecological examination and was also tortured with thumbscrews to verify her statements. Tassi was sentenced to a year imprisonment but was released earlier. A month after the trial, Artemiscia married a less gifted artist and went to Florence.

Gentileschi was the first woman to be admitted to the Accademia dell’Arte del Disegno in Florence in 1616.
