Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun: Lady Hamilton

The French painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842) was quite unfortunate with the significant men in her life. She had a successful career as a portrait painter, though. Since she was female, she was not allowed to have a training at the painter’s guild. To mirror an academic training, she copied plaster casts and engravings at home with instructions of her father-who was a painter too-until his death that same year, and attended exhibitions with her mother. She developed a Neoclassical style, more focused on glamour than depth. At 15 she was capable of making a living, but it was her stepfather who collected her fees. At 19 she had to close her studio temporarily because she had no license. To escape her stepfather, with whom she had a bad relation, she married an art dealer called Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Le Brun, descendant of a painter’s dynasty. His social network was a boost for her career, but the marriage itself was a disaster. Also he confiscated her fees. Her name became known at the court of King Louis XVI. Several portraits she made of his wife queen Marie Antoinette. The French revolution led to the execution by guillotine of Marie Antoinette and the fleeing of Elisabeth to Italy and later Vienna, Russia and London where she continued her career.
