“CouCou” is the call of the bird that sounds as its name and is French for: ‘cuckoo’. The bird is known to lay its eggs in the nest of other birds, forcing them to raise its offspring. Secondly, it is also French for the small children’s ‘hide and seek’ game ‘peekaboo’ where a person suddenly presents himself saying ‘CouCou’. And third, CouCou is also the name for the cuckoo-clock, where a bird pops out every hour saying ‘Cuckoo’. In France, ‘CouCou’ has become a way of saying “hello”, with these connotations of the former in mind..
So our ‘CouCou Compassion’ designs are a greeting to a new day as an intruding cuckoo chick, with a wish, like ‘elevate my day’! The Spanish version (Cucú) or the English ‘Cuckoo’ do not appear to be used as a greeting (rather the opposite), so we use ‘Hello’ and ‘Hola’.
