That was less of a problem in the 80s and earlier, before the knitted hat, or beanie, became a fashion item. Its domain was where everyone expected it to be: It was outside headwear for the Cold season. The Beanie—slang for head—was already in use by college students in the early 1900s. Later it was discovered by blue-collar workers, because the brimless hat kept their hair out of the way while working. They became common headgear for stereotypical dockworkers and sailors in movies and television shows.
