“CouCou” is French for: ‘cuckoo’; The bird who lays its eggs in other bird’s the nests. It’s also French for the small children’s ‘peekaboo’ game where a person suddenly presents himself saying ‘CouCou’. In France, ‘CouCou’ has become a way of saying “hello”, with these connotations of the former in mind..
That doesn’t work in Spanish or English, so we use ‘Hello’ and ‘Hola’.
